AUGUSTA (AP) — The Coast Guard is warning ice fishermen to move their ice shacks from the Kennebec River as it prepares for its springtime ritual of breaking the river ice.
The Coast Guard says ice-breaking operations could begin as soon as Friday because of forecasts for heavy rain, which will increase the possibility of ice jams and flooding.
Capt. James McPherson, commander of Coast Guard in northern New England, says ice-breaking is a sure sign of spring.
Once under way, the ice-breaking will begin in Merrymeeting Bay and move north to Gardiner. The Coast Guard plans to use four cutters and ice-breaking tugs in the operation.
