CANTON — At a packed meeting Thursday night, selectmen were given a written complaint against a member of the board.
Resident Craig A. Greeley Sr. submitted the complaint against Selectman Shane Gallant. According to the complaint, Greeley was shoveling out a fire hydrant as an employee of the Canton Water District when Gallant, driving a Canton snow plow truck at excessive speed in a 25 mph zone, hit Greeley with snow with such force Greeley had to seek medical attention. A passer-by who observed the incident turned his car around and came back to check on Greeley after seeing him fall to the ground, Greeley said.
According to Greeley, visibility was good at the time and Gallant could not help but see him. He had no difficulty recognizing Gallant through the truck windshield, he said.
Gallant said it was still snowing, visibility was poor and he did not see Greeley in time to slow down or raise the plow and wing.
Greeley said he confronted Gallant after the incident and Gallant told him, “‘I saw you.'”
“That is a lie,” Gallant responded at the meeting.
“You have been nothing but trouble since you came to this town,” he told Greeley.
Greeley said Gallant knew who it was beside the road.
Selectman Don Hutchins asked Greeley, “What is going to make this right in your eyes?”
Greeley said selectmen should require drivers to slow down or raise their plow wings when they see pedestrians.
Board Chairman Scotty Kilbreth said selectmen would consider the testimony and write Greeley a letter with their decision.
Gallant is also chief of the Canton Fire Department.
In other matters, selectmen received six applications for the road foreman job. They will conduct interviews on March 15 and try to fill the position as quickly as possible.
Selectmen urged residents to vote in the annual town elections from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the town office. There are two selectmen’s positions open.
The annual town meeting will be held in the old Municipal Building at 9 a.m. Saturday.
