AUGUSTA – Rep. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, is encouraging women in the Lewiston-Auburn area to consider applying for the Maine NEW Leadership Summer Institute, which provides training in public policy and politics for young women. The program is offered by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, which is part of the University of Maine System.

“The NEW Leadership institute provides an excellent opportunity for young women in our communities to follow in the tradition of strong Maine women influencing state and national policy,” said Rotundo. “I look forward to working with graduates from that program in the near future on a wide breadth of important policy issues.”

The Maine NEW Leadership Summer Institute training will be held at the University of Maine in Orono from June 2 to 7 and is based on a curriculum developed by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers.

The non-partisan training program, provided at no cost to undergraduate college women in Maine, provides educational training on civic and political leadership. Students receive training in policy making, public speaking, coalition building, networking, advocacy and campaigning.

Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by Thursday, March 17. Additional information and application forms are available at mcspolicycenter.umaine.edu/?q=NEWleadership.
