Arrangements have been completed for the sale of the Armory building and lot on Park Street to the Lewiston Daily Sun by F. E. Stanley of Newton, Mass. The city of Lewiston occupies the second and third floors as an armory while the ground floor has been under lease to The Sun for some time. Last year, The Sun secured the vacant lot between the New England Telephone Co. building and the armory so that its lot will now have a frontage of 100 feet on Park Street, between the DeWitt and the Telephone building.
50 years ago, 1961
Leo McGraw, attendance officer for the Lewiston public school system, reported a good attendance in the elementary grades for Saturday’s classes. He said most classes had normal attendance. The elementary classes were in session Saturday to make up for Thursday’s closing because of the storm.
25 years ago, 1986
The Lewiston Police Department’s selective enforcement team issued arrests or summonses for 34 violations during February, continuing the effort to step up enforcement in the downtown.
Capt. Larry Gilbert said the team arrested four men under the state’s john’s law and two women for promotion of prostitution.
In addition, 15 drug-related violations were discovered, including nine for possession of marijuana, three for trafficking in marijuana. The team also made three drunk-driving arrests and issued six summonses for motor-vehicle violations.
