This winter’s toll on the budget for plowing and treating the roads

Issue:  Town staff has managed to stretch road money all winter long, Town Manager Eva Leavitt said. The winter balance will likely pay for any March storms. The money is there for personnel and the purchase of salt. Other work, such as purchasing steel for equipment repairs, will be limited.

The scoop: Selectmen approved spending up to $3,000 for steel to aid repairs.

Up next: The budget will need to be carefully monitored, particularly if another snowstorm hits before spring weather takes over.

Selectmen mull Androscoggin County restructuring

Issue: The Androscoggin County Charter Commission asked all 14 towns in the county for written comments on the structure of county government and any recommendations for changes. Selectmen made none. However, they suggested several talking points.

The scoop: An expansion to a five-member county commission, evening meetings, a county manager and regional animal control services ought to be discussed among Charter Commission members, selectmen said.

Up next: The Androscoggin County Charter Commission is planning a public hearing to listen to the public’s thoughts on a new charter. The hearing is scheduled for March 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Androscoggin County Building in Auburn.
