UNITY TOWNSHIP (AP) — Three bodies were found Sunday in the rubble of a mobile home that burned in this rural township, but the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said the victims could not be positively identified yet.
A team of six fire investigators was at the scene of the fire on Reynolds Road off Route 139 in Kennebec County.
Authorities said the fire apparently broke out Saturday night but was not discovered until 10 a.m. Sunday when a passerby spotted the smoldering rubble on the dead-end road.
The mobile home was flattened in the fire and the three bodies were burned beyond recognition, said spokesman Stephen McCausland of the state Public Safety Department. The home was occupied by two men and a woman, and all were unaccounted for. No names were given.
McCausland said the bodies have been taken to the office of the state medical examiner, who will determine the cause of death and identify the victims.
Unity Township is an unorganized municipality about 32 miles northeast of Augusta. It had a total population of about 30 in the 2000 census.
