LEWISTON — Darcie Beaudin has joined the national team of volunteer leaders to launch the 2011 March for Babies fundraising campaign of the March of Dimes.

As a mother, Beaudin has taken on the role of event chairwoman of the March for Babies to raise awareness and funding to provide for babies who are born prematurely or with birth defects.

March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser, helps fund research and educational programs aimed at helping moms have healthy babies. Last year, the Lewiston/Auburn event raised more than $36,000. This year, Beaudin hopes to bring in more by focusing on new revenue and helping to raise awareness in the area.

“As a volunteer, this campaign gives me a unique opportunity to help the community that I love. And as a mother, I can’t think of a more important cause than our babies,” said Beaudin, who will be visiting local businesses to request their support in the coming months.

Lewiston/Auburn residents can sign up at www.marchforbabies.org and start a team with co-workers, family or friends. Last year, nearly 300 people attended the event, which will be held on Sunday, May 1. Those interested in helping plan the event may call 289-2072.
