100 years ago,1911

At a meeting of the Lewiston and Auburn Grocers Association held Wednesday evening in the Lewiston municipal court rooms, several matters of interest to the local grocers were discussed. While the attendance at the meeting was small, there was much enthusiasm.

It was announced that later in the season, the association would have a banquet. This is an annual affair and one which brings out the majority of the grocers in the two cities.

50 years ago, 1961

An organizational meeting of The Untouchables, a new hot-rod club, was held last night at the home of the newly elected president, Fournier Reynolds, Goff Street, Auburn.

Other officers elected are Almon Jordan, vice president; Stewart Marshall, secretary, and Allen Wheeler, treasurer. The club adviser is Hayward Carsley Jr., assistant principal at Edward Little High School.

As a project, the group will build a club car to enter in drag races next summer at the Sanford Race Track.

25 years ago, 1986

MECHANIC FALLS — The town report this year is dedicated to nationally known inventor Walt Perry, perhaps best known for building an engine that fits on a dime.

The report was dedicated to the longtime resident for lending expertise to the town, for keeping the fire whistle in working order and for being an active member of the fire department for 22 years.

Perry is nationally known for his invention of the smallest working double-action mill engine which is mounted on a dime.
