LIVERMORE FALLS — RSU 36 directors voted unanimously that the $2,700 to establish a junior varsity softball team at the middle school needs be paid upfront.

Budget cuts last year eliminated the program for the current year.

A parent has indicated that they will donate $1,500 toward the program, middle school Principal Robert Kahler told the board Thursday.

Athletic Director Warren Forbes is scheduled to meet with the All Sports Boosters to see if the remaining $1,200 is available to run the program, Kahler said.

Board Vice Chairwoman Denise Rodzen of Livermore Falls, who is also a member of the Boosters, said there is not that much available in that account. Rodzen abstained from the vote.

Fundraising opportunities are also being developed.

Superintendent Sue Pratt recommended that the money be received upfront so the program will not be pulled from the players once the program begins.

Kahler said he hasn’t held a sign-up for the team because he doesn’t want to do it if there is not going to be enough money available to pay for it.

In other business Thursday, directors accepted the resignation of two board members. Chairman Ashley O’Brien said Gina St. Pierre of Livermore resigned for personal reasons. Director Jennifer Pooler of Livermore Falls resigned because she is moving out of the district.

O’Brien said Pooler, a Maine Department of Education employee, has been a “wonderful asset” to the board who has helped update the board’s policies and helped the RSU 36 board and Jay-RSU 36 consolidation effort through the department.

In another matter, Pratt said the district has used the five snow days built into the school calendar.
