AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Two bills seeking to decriminalize possession of small amounts of pot are coming up for review before a legislative committee.

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee takes up the bills sponsored by independent Rep. Benjamin Chipman of Portland on Thursday afternoon.

One of his bills would remove criminal penalties for possession of up to five ounces of marijuana, and the other would decriminalize possession of six or fewer marijuana plants.

Advocates for changes in the marijuana laws from throughout the state are expected to testify.
