AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Despite the crisis unfolding in Japan, Gov. Paul LePage still regards nuclear power as a potential option for Maine’s future energy mix.
Spokesman Dan Demeritt tells the Bangor Daily News that what’s happening in Japan is tragic. But Demeritt says LePage is not changing his position that Maine needs to consider all energy options going forward. That would include any option that would safely reduce energy costs for Maine businesses and families.
Demeritt says that to his knowledge, the administration’s had no conversations with any potential nuclear developers.
Meanwhile, officials with the decommissioned Maine Yankee nuclear power plant say the events taking place in Japan could not happen at the Wiscasset site, where the only things left are 64 canisters that hold spent nuclear fuel rods and other radioactive materials.
