PORTLAND (AP) — A 29-year-old Portland man who strangled his girlfriend, cut off her head and set her body on fire has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Justice Roland Cole sentenced Chad Gurney on Wednesday to 50 years in prison for the murder of 18-year-old Zoe Sarnacki, plus another 10 years for arson.

Cole last month rejected Gurney’s insanity defense and found him guilty of killing Sarnacki in his Portland apartment on May 25, 2009.

Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 75 years, while Gurney’s attorney was seeking a 35-year sentence.

Gurney sobbed and apologized while reading a statement in court, saying he wishes he could switch places with Sarnacki.
