PARIS — Selectmen and town managers from the area will meet with legislators Friday to ask for a cut of Oxford County casino revenues.

The casino referendum that passed in November included provisions to share casino revenue with harness racing groups, educational funds, the town of Oxford and others.

Although Oxford County will receive a percentage, some towns bordering Oxford, such as Poland and Mechanic Falls, won’t receive direct funding from casino revenue. Town managers and selectmen will request legislators add local towns into the shared casino revenue.

Paris Town Manager Phil Tarr is hosting the meeting at 10 a.m. at the Paris Fire Station.

Tarr said the intent of the meeting is to create a regional fund for local towns to use for police, fire and roads to alleviate strain resulting from the casino’s presence. Paris, Norway, Poland and Mechanic Falls will be represented at the meeting.

He said he wasn’t sure yet what the possible effects of the casino would be.

Tarr said he’s seeking to take some percentage of total revenues from the money earmarked for another purpose, such as the 4 percent directed to the tribal governments of the Penobscot Nation and Passamaquoddy Tribe.

“We’re asking for the opportunity to speak to our legislators, and say, ‘We, too, have some interest in this,’” Tarr said last month. The meeting was previously scheduled for Feb. 25 but was postponed due to a snowstorm that day.

Tarr said Rep. Teresea Hayes, Rep. Tom Winsor, Rep. Jim Hamper, Rep. Michael McClellan and Sen. Dave Hastings have been invited. Residents are invited to come and speak, too.
