As the head of an organization directly involved in Maine’s health care system, I appreciate Lindsay Tice’s recent article, “Health and Wealth II” (March 6). At a time when the profession of journalism is often criticized, Ms. Tice’s piece goes to the heart of what journalism is supposed to be. It informs the public in an objective, fact-based manner on a crucial issue that affects all of us.

Health care costs, especially here in Maine, are among the highest in the country. Tice’s article, a result of some pretty extensive research, shows us one of the reasons why that is the case.

It is an article that needs to be read by everyone in the state.

It is quite apparent that many of the people heading Maine’s health care institutions, all good people, have clearly lost touch. Their stewardship of scarce health care dollars is remarkably cavalier.

I congratulate the Sun Journal, and especially Ms. Tice, for an excellent piece of journalism.
