GORHAM — Maine will host the  Elks “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Northeast Region 1 Regional Championship on Saturday, March 26 at the University of Southern Maine, 37 College Avenue.

All competitors from the six-state region already have a local, district and state championship under their belts.

Representing Maine will be Isabel Dawson (Portland Elks Lodge), Henry Westphal (Portland Elks Lodge), Ciara LeClair (Waterville Elks Lodge), Colby Esty (Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge), Caitlin Paradis (Presque Isle Elks Lodge), and Stephen Gikas (Portland Elks Lodge)

These talented youngsters have already proven themselves to be the standouts in a competition that started last fall with more than 3 million participants, ages 8 to 13. At stake is a chance to advance to the national finals, where only 72 participants will compete April 30 at the birthplace of basketball, Springfield, Mass.

The contest is entirely funded by the Elks National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Last year, the Foundation disbursed more than $13-million in support of youth programs, Veterans’ services, drug education programs, college scholarships, and aid to people with disabilities.
