100 years ago,1911

In speaking of the streets in this city a prominent Lewiston man says, “The people here who are complaining of the streets in this city ought to see the streets in Portland. They are wretched. There are no gutters at all and the slush is ankle deep. In crossing the street one has to jump and wade. They are a disgrace to a city like Portland. The streets of Lewiston are like a hard wood floor compared to those of Portland.”

50 years ago, 1961

Mrs. Victoria Salvano of Court Street, Auburn, is the new manager of the Kenmore Hotel in Auburn, taking over management from Frank and Jayne Maliar of Lewiston. The hotel is owned by Harry Garron, owner of the Graymore Hotel at Portland. Mrs. Salvano formerly operated the Grotto in Lewiston.

25 years ago, 1986

This year’s inductees bring the Twin Cities Sports Hall of Fame population to 13, and the place is filling up to the point one wonders “Who can be next?” Addition of Frank Alexander (Pat) French, Norman Parent, Richard McWilliams and Maurice (Lisbon Lefty) Lachance, announced Monday, covers the field rather well, considering the nine predecessors of the two previous selection years.

The first five were Bill Carrigan, Bob Legendre, Larry Charest, Zeke Dwelley and Johnny Bower, and last year’s group contained Hyme Shanahan, Ray Lebel, Paul Junior and Bud White.
