NORWAY — Voters at the annual town meeting may be asked to approve almost $200,000 to complete work on several roads.

Town Manager David Holt told the Board of Selectmen on Thursday night that the money will be requested in a separate budget article to put an overlay, or finishing coat, on sections of Morse, Dunn, Shedd, Town Farm and Hemingway roads. The roads were reclaimed and had a base pavement applied over the last few years. The new work would ensure that the roads would not deteriorate quickly.

Holt said $178,000 for the reclamation and base paving of sections of Pleasant Street from the intersection of Crockett Ridge Road and Penn Ridge to the end of the curve is already set aside and the work is scheduled for this year.

Another $274,500 is needed for work on other roads such as Frost Hill, Greenwood, Don Hunt, Crockett Ridge and Korhonen roads. That money will not be requested until June 2012.

Holt said the Highway Department may also be looking for funds to buy a new grader to replace a 1997 model the town has spent $88,000 repairing in the last 14 years.

“It doesn’t make sense to keep putting money into a machine that’s maybe a lemon,” he said.

Highway Superintendent Ron Springer said the cost of a new grader is about $200,000 but the department has about $120,000 it can take from the heavy equipment account to put toward it.

The remainder of the money could come from surplus funds or a bond, Springer said. The department may also seek funds to buy a new truck that is capable of plowing and other work to replace a Ford in the department’s fleet.

Holt said the town budget is almost complete and will be presented to the Board of Selectmen next month. In April, the Budget Committee will begin meeting with town departments to review their budget requests. Both the Budget Committee and selectmen will present their budget recommendations to town meeting voters in June.
