RUMFORD — Selectmen approved a request Thursday night from River Valley Growth Council member Jim Rinaldo to allow the council to create hiking trails on a town lot.
At issue is a huge rectangular lot through woods behind River Valley Plaza and the Rumford Municipal Garage.
Rinaldo said the council wants to create a 4- to 5-mile loop trail in the lot, which is known as Lot 28 on the property map, by mainly using snowmobile trails.
Where they can’t use existing trails, they would cut a swath through the underbrush that is 4 feet wide by 7 feet tall, but go around trees rather than cut them down, he said.
Asked by Board of Selectmen Chairman Brad Adley where access to the trail would start, Rinaldo said it would be the small strip to the left of the plaza and to the right of the town garage access road.
He said that area already has a snowmobile trail on it.
Selectmen approved the idea 4-0 with minimal discussion.
In other business, the board voted 4-0 to lift the municipal winter parking ban unless there is a snowstorm.
