RANDOLPH — Virginia Isabel Poland Macfarland, 93, a longtime resident of Hermits Lane, Hartford, passed away peacefully in March 8,  at her daughter’s home in Randolph, after a long illness.

She was born in January 1918, one of two daughters born to the late Everett and Alida Riley Poland. She grew up in Needham, Mass., and graduated from Needham High School. She and her family spent carefree summers in Hartford, many as guests at Green Acres Inn.

On July 30, 1944, she married Edward A. Macfarland of Dover, Mass., in Fayetteville, N.C. She spent the next 25 years primarily as a homemaker, focused on raising her children. She was a member of the First Parish Church in Needham, Mass., an active member of the Wig and Whiskers Theatre and a charter member of the Needham Community Theatre. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years, as well as a neighborhood chairman. She moved permanently to Maine in 1967. She was politically active at the state and local levels, attending political caucuses and serving as a member of the school board for SAD 39 for 12 years. She also enjoyed her memberships with the Canton Garden Club and the Rumford area Searchlight Club.

Virginia was an avid reader. She loved playing games, particularly Parcheesi and challenging her children with large vocabulary words. Her family viewed her as a “walking dictionary” and enjoyed trying to find a word she did not know the meaning of. Her family was always her priority. Her greatest joy was her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.

Virginia is survived by her son, Scott E. Macfarland and his wife, Barbara Collette, of Chapin, S.C.; her daughters, Mrs. Scott W. (Alida M.) Gowell of Buckfield, Mrs. Charles J. (Lynn M.) Izzi Jr. of Randolph and Mrs. Conrad P. (Laurie M.) Tidswell of Gastonia, N.C.; six grandchildren, Kristi Gowell Roark of Wolfeboro, N.H., Lisa Gowell Suro of West Valley City, Utah, Conrad Tidswell of Hallandale, Fla., Katherine Tidswell Rhinehart of Leland, S.C., Christine Izzi Rogerson of York and Nicholas Izzi of Baltimore, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Liliana, Max, Brityn, Karsyn, Tatum, Bodie and Conrad.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Everett and Alida Poland; her husband, Edward A. Macfarland; and her sister, Adelaide Poland Ray.
