WATERVILLE — Avis G. Witherell, 76, of Welch Avenue in Monmouth died Thursday, March 17, at Mount St. Joseph nursing home in Waterville.

She was born in Augusta, June 13, 1934, the daughter of George L. and Grace Berry Gove. She was educated in the North Monmouth grade school and graduated valedictorian of her class from Monmouth Academy in 1952.

On Nov. 7, 1952, Avis and Philip Witherell were married in Winthrop. On Feb. 24, Phil and Avis renewed their wedding vows having celebrated 58 years of marriage. Avis enjoyed playing cribbage with Marge Cottrell and Esther Prince and enjoyed watching horse races, especially Tagalong Tani and Tagalong Kev.

She was a member of the Monmouth Mother’s Club for many years. Avis worked as a substitute teacher at Cottrell School and had also packed apples for Chick Orchards and Highmoor Farms.

Avis is survived by husband, Philip, of Monmouth; her children, Brett Witherell of Monmouth and Tanya Hubbard and her husband, Jim Bartels, of Knox; two grandchildren, Jason Hubbard of San Francisco and Megan Hurd and her husband, Evan; and a brother, Afton Gove and his wife, Pauline, of Winthrop.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a son, Kevin Witherell in 1975.
