In commenting on the recent purchase of the Armory building property in Lewiston by the Lewiston Daily Sun, The Rumford Times says “The Sun is one of the brightest and newsiest newspapers in the State. It is with the greatest of pleasure that we learn that our esteemed contemporary, The Lewiston Sun has been so prosperous in late years that it is to own its home.”
50 years ago, 1961
A quantity of ice cream, soft drinks and hot dogs was taken from the refrigerator of an Auburn apartment yesterday.
Police reported last night that the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Coy of Drummond Street was entered during the day. Coy told police he and his wife left home at 9 a.m. yesterday and when they returned home at 9 p.m., they discovered the theft. The larceny victim also told police that the living room had been cleaned up and straightened out by the thieves.

Within the next two weeks, Lewiston-Auburn’s 27,000 residential and business telephone users must decide which of two long-distance companies they want to carry their out-of-state phone calls.
The mandate to pick a long-distance phone company, even if you are perfectly content with your present service, is another piece of fall-out from the federal government’s dismantling of American Telephone and Telegraph’s national telephone monopoly two years ago.
