OXFORD — A fire that destroyed a barn on Fore Street early Monday was apparently caused by a wood stove, Oxford Fire Department Capt. Shawn Cordwell said Monday. There were no injuries.
“The cause was accidental,” Cordwell said, referring to the blaze on the property of David Witham.
The fire was discovered by a passerby at 3:30 a.m., and by the time firefighters arrived, the building was fully engulfed. They were able to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings, he said.
Tractors, chain saws and other tools were destroyed, Cordwell said, but none of the livestock penned up behind the barn were hurt.
Firefighters from Norway, Paris, Otisfield, Mechanic Falls and Poland responded to the blaze.
