RUMFORD — Mary Elizabeth Politis, 92, of Kennebec Street, died Sunday, March 20, at Rumford Hospital, as a result of complications from pneumonia.
She was born in Lewiston, Dec. 5, 1918, a daughter of the late Prosper and Theresa (Linehan) Gionet. Mary was educated in Lewiston schools and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of 1936.
She married Anthony F. Politis Sr. in Lewiston on Nov. 11, 1944, and together they celebrated 47 years of marriage; he passed away on Aug. 9, 1992. After graduation, she was employed as a telephone operator for New England Phone Co. She then worked for many years as the manager at the St. Athanasius School cafeteria and later at Rumford Answer Phone.
Mary was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Mary was a caring and gentle person who loved her kids and grandchildren dearly.
She enjoyed family get togethers, cooking great meals for the holidays, and spent many summers at her camp at Roxbury Pond.
Surviving are her children, Anthony F. Politis Jr. of Rumford, Jane Giasson and husband, Arthur, of Rumford and Anne Coffin and husband, William, of Lewiston; a sister, Claire Walker of Poland Spring; a brother, George Gionet and wife, Mary, of Hanover; five grandchildren, Deborah Giasson and friend, John Wheeler, Christine McPherson and husband, Kevin, Laurie Reed and husband, Scott, Cindy Bradshaw and husband, Matt and Brian Coffin and wife, Heidi; six great-grandchildren, Joshua Maillet, Ethan McPherson, Erin McPherson, Jocelyn Coffin, Natalie Reed and Kyle Reed; stepgreat-grandson, Nathan Maillet; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Anthony F. Politis Sr.; and a brother-in-law, Gerry Walker.
The family would like to offer a special thank-you to Dr. Jacob Ledesma and the staff at Rumford Hospital for the wonderful care given to Mary during her recent illness and also a special thank-you to Nancy and Gerry Roberts for the tender care they gave while Mary was at home.
