JAY — Sidney “Sid” Barry Friedman, 61, of Jay passed away suddenly early Sunday, March 20, at his home.

He was born on May 7, 1949, in Miami, Fla., the first son of Albert and Hyla (Brett) Friedman. He attended Nathan Bedford High School in Jacksonville, Fla., and enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating in 1968. He served in the Vietnam Conflict aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Shangri-La.

After his stint in the Navy, Sid moved north to the state of Maine following his parents. He met his wife Sheila White in 1972, and they were married shortly after on Sept. 1, of that same year. Their next anniversary they would have celebrated their 39th together.

Sid spent 27 years working at the “Otis” paper mill in Jay, retiring for health reasons. He enjoyed collecting antique guns, and was an avid hunter in his earlier years and liked to go fishing. He was a member of the Wilton Fish & Game Club and enjoyed watching many different sports in the community. He was always quick with a joke, or a kind word for his friends, family, and co-workers, he always had a smile for whomever he met.

Sidney is survived by his mother, Hyla, and his loving wife, Sheila, both of Jay; his son, Matthew and his wife, Kristen, of Norridgewock; daughter, Stacie and partner, Keith Fish, of Baja, Mexico; brother, David and sister-in-law, Jean, of Tom’s River, N.J., and their children, Brett and wife, Melissa, Patricia, and Greg.

He was predeceased by his father, Albert Friedman.
