NORWAY — A local man who wants an easier way to get his snowmobile onto Lake Pennesseewassee has asked the Board of Selectmen for permission to create a shorter snowmobile path from his house on Orchard Street to the lake.

Robert Schott of 42 Orchard St. told the board at their Thursday meeting that he is trying to find the easiest way to get to the Ordway Grove on Pleasant Street and then onto Lake Pennesseewassee, but it requires crossing public roads.

He is proposing a route down from Orchard Street to Pikes Hill Road to Water Street and crossing Main Street at Pleasant Street to to get to the Ordway Grove trail and onto the lake from there.

Although state law allows crossing within a certain number of feet, Schott said he wants to make sure everything is legal and within the parameters of what the selectmen would approve.

“It’s no different than riding a bicycle. My lights are on all the time,” Schott said. He added that a snowmobiler never wants to go on pavement unless they have to because of the damage it can do the skies of the machine.

Board members said they appreciated Schott coming before them to talk about it but wanted to get answers to some questions before they gave the go-ahead.

“This doesn’t sit well with me,” Selectmen Chairman Irene Millett said. She was worried about traffic where Schott wants to cross to Pleasant Street.

Town Manager David Holt said because the request included crossing a state road, he felt the state Department of Transportation should be advised. He also suggested if it were approved, that proper signage be put up.

The board has agreed to review the request at its next meeting in April.
