RANGELEY — A Sanford man faces a drunken-driving charge after police stopped to see if the driver of a snowmobile was hurt after it appeared the machine struck a trail sign, police said.
Rangeley police officer Jared Austin issued Andrew D. Adams, 50, a summons on a charge of operating under the influence, Chief Dennis Leahy said Tuesday.
Austin was driving south out of town at 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Route 4 near the Saddleback Motor Inn and saw a snowmobiler trying to get his machine unstuck, Leahy said.
When he stopped to see if the driver was hurt, the man was having a hard time standing up, Leahy said.
Austin asked Adams to take off his helmet so he could continue speaking to him.
Austin told Adams that he was going to administer a field sobriety test and Adams failed, Leahy said.
They then went to the police station where Austin had him blow into the Intoxilyzer machine, and he blew a 0.16 percent blood alcohol level, Leahy said. The legal limit for blood alcohol is 0.08 percent.
A friend took Adams back to the Motor Inn where he was staying after he was charged.
Adams is scheduled to appear in a Farmington court on April 21.
