LEWISTON — Alonzo Ginn Sherman Jr., 64, also known as “Big Al,” died suddenly on Tuesday, March 22, at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his family, losing his longtime battle with diabetes.
He was born May 19, 1946, in Butler, Pa., the eldest son of Alonzo Sr. and Marion Sherman with one brother, Wayne Sherman, now married to Nancy. Al was raised in Auburn, where he acquired a love of gardening and farming from his family. While in 4-H, he enjoyed training dairy cows for show and won many awards.
Al attended Edward Little High School and University of Maine at Orono. He married the love of his life, Ginette (Ginger) Poulin on Sept. 16, 1967, in Lewiston.
He has two daughters, Lisa, now married to Michael Morin, and Linda Sherman. Al was a loving husband and father. He was especially proud of the time spent with his two grandsons, Tanner Mulligan and Garrett Morin. Much of his free time was devoted to them. Al rarely missed going to their many games and activities. He introduced the boys to one of his favorite hobbies, fishing, as well as gardening and was proud to know he was leaving such loving memories for “his boys.”
He loved to have his family gather often to enjoy the many recipes and comfort food he would prepare for them. His grandsons will always remember the turnip with carrots and specialty crepes.
Al wore many hats during his lifetime and is known by many people for his work in real estate, insurance and real estate appraisal. Most recently, he returned to his farming roots and started to help others grow and maintain their own gardens. He was also loved and adored by the staff and patrons at the Lewiston YWCA in his parttime role as the “Mr. Fix-it” man.
Al enjoyed life to the fullest. Many will remember him for his quick wit and outgoing personality. He was never afraid to say what he wanted to and was always there to help family and friends in so many different ways. His family will miss his constant devotion and attention.
The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at St. Mary’s.
