LEWISTON — Out of the Box Theater Company will present “A Walk in the Woods,” a two-man play nominated for both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, in April.
John Blanchette will direct the show with Mark Hazard and Paul Menezes assuming the roles of two high-powered arms limitation negotiators who meet away from the bargaining table in a peaceful wooded setting in Geneva over a period of several months. They do so in an attempt to reach common ground for peace talks between their two countries, Russia and the United States.
The play, by Lee Blessing, also depicts the developing relationship between the two men. Hazard plays Russian diplomat Andrey Botvinnik; Menezes is American diplomat John Honeyman.
Although a work of fiction,” A Walk in the Woods” is based loosely on the 1982 Geneva Peace Talks, where American Paul Nitze and Soviet Yuli Kvitsinsky met, unencumbered by other officials, aides or even security guards, so they could speak more honestly and openly about world peace.
Assisting Blanchette are Michelle Washburn, producer; Stan Spilecki, set/light design; Linda Britt, stage manager; Sue Brown, costumer; Patricia Phillips, light operator; Rachel Morin, publicist; Melody Driscoll, prompter; and Jeff Soifer, poster design.
Out of the Box Theater Company received the Moss Hart Memorial Award for “Medea” in 2009 and “Death of a Salesman” in 2010, both plays directed by Linda Britt.
Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30 at DownStage at L/A Arts, 5 Canal St. alley, just off Pine Street. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. For reservations, call L/A Arts at 782-7228 or visit www.laarts.org.
