AUBURN — Benches, trees and streetlights in a downtown green space across Court Street from Auburn Hall will be making way for a new parking lot and a drive-through at the Dunlap Building.
The City Council on Monday agreed to sell the 16,703-square-foot green space to the owners of the Dunlap Building, 31 Court Street Associates, for $4 per square foot. That comes out to $66,812.
Roland Miller, city economic development director, said the building’s owners hope to expand the first floor of the building.
“It’s for a new tenant that will potentially be located here,” he said. “That’s going to cause a modification to the existing way the lot is set up.”
Miller said he could not comment on the potential tenant. Plans call for adding a drive-through with three lanes north of the Dunlap building, along North Main Street.
“This potentially could lead to a long-term commitment that will ensure the economic viability of this anchor building in the downtown,” Miller said.
He said the old benches and streetlights will be recycled and kept by the city to repair or replace similar installations around town. The trees will be cut down, cut up and sold, with the proceeds going to Auburn’s low-income heating assistance program.
