March 23 was the first anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act. I am writing in opposition to the Republican efforts to cut off funding for the law. A recent poll shows that 55 percent of Americans agree with me.

The law prevents insurance companies from stopping or unexpectedly capping coverage when someone needs medical care. It prohibits insurance companies from raising premiums with no accountability. It bans insurance companies from refusing coverage to children born with disabilities.

It allows parents to provide health coverage for children who have finished school. It provides seniors with preventive care and lower prescription drug costs. Small business owners get tax credits to make employees’ health coverage more affordable.

Finally, it frees our children from the threat of out-of-control government debt and deficits by holding government accountable for its spending. Independent estimates show it will reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars by cracking down on waste, fraud and abuse.

What’s not to like?

These new choices, freedoms and options are possible because the Affordable Care Act holds insurance companies accountable. Sadly, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has promised that Republicans will continue their repeal efforts, whether the American people want them to or not.
