GREENWOOD — Mt. Abram will hold a special Ski for Charity Day on Sunday to benefit an orphanage and mission in Africa started by a Hebron Academy teacher.

Part of the proceeds from lift ticket sales will benefit the Little Field Home orphanage in Malawi, Africa, which was established by Janet Littlefield in 2004.

The orphanage has grown from 20 students to more than 100. Now, Friends of the Little Field Home is working to raise $40,000 for two community buildings as the mission expands to education, health care and job security for residents in the Ntchisi rain forest area of Malawi.

In recent years, AIDS has orphaned thousands of children in the country. The Little Field Home has been helping children there and is working to create a self-sustaining community.

Mt. Abram spokesman Kevin Rosenberg said Friends of the Little Field Home approached the ski area.

“We thought it was a great cause,” Rosenberg said. He said this is the first year for the fundraiser but he can see it becoming a regular event.

Beyond a portion of the ticket sales, skiers can pay $10 to enter a slalom race or buy raffle tickets for prizes, the proceeds of which will all go to Friends of the Little Field Home.

Raffle prizes include sculpture art from Malawi and a handcrafted quilt, as well as learn-to-ski packages and a Mt. Abram 50 years commemorative poster.

Rosenberg said ski conditions are “excellent,” and that 100 percent of trails will be open this weekend, which he called “about unheard of at this time of year.”
