MEXICO — Two car-deer accidents happened within 62 minutes of each other and virtually in the same place on Route 2 Thursday morning.
Mexico police Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said with spring’s arrival and the slightly warmer weather, deer are moving, unlike in the fall when hunters are in the woods and winter when the deer seek shelter.
“Drivers have to be vigilant,” he said, “particularly from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. and during the evening hours.”
At 6:26 a.m., near Naples Packing, Peggy Berry, 40, of Carthage was driving her 2000 Ford van west on Route 2/River Road, when a deer jumped in front of her. The deer was killed. Berry’s van sustained about $2,500 damage. She was unhurt.
At 7:28 a.m., about 20 feet from the first car/deer accident, Jessica Stuart, 26, of Roxbury Road, Mexico, was driving west in her 1997 Subaru Outback wagon when a deer jumped over a bank from the Androscoggin River into her path. The deer was killed. Neither her passenger, Justin Jackson, 21, nor two young children, were hurt. The vehicle sustained about $2,500 damage.
“When I was dealing with the second crash, I could see two more deer on the banking,” Hodsdon said.
The deer population is particularly high between Dixfield and Mexico, he said.
