I thank the Sun Journal for the article, “Laptops: 10 years later,” that appeared March 20.

Educators say that such technology helps level the playing field for students. Maybe so, but it certainly does not level the playing field for the taxpayers. Seven million dollars annually is a huge sum of money.

I think Gov. Paul LePage should step in and maybe trim some fat off teacher salaries and retirement benefits to offset the computer expense because it sounds like the program is taking a big chunk of the teachers’ workload off their shoulders.

Who knows? Maybe in a few short years, union teachers will be replaced by non-union geeks to sit in front of the class and check their Facebook accounts while the students listen to music on “Garageland.”
