I was very disappointed that the Sun Journal chose an easy and sensational headline regarding the sentencing of Chad Gurney (March 17).
The fact that he went to Oak Hill High School 12 years ago has little or no relevance to the headline. Everyone went to high school somewhere. The headline is an attempt to get people to read the article at the expense of Oak Hill High School. The Sun Journal published the article from the Portland Press Herald and its headline was simple and factual: “Gurney sentence: 60 years.”
So many students from Oak Hill have gone on to great colleges, raised families and made a significant difference in their communities but we rarely hear about them. We never hear that they were also athletes.
The entire situation is sad and unfortunate. With that headline, the Sun Journal made it personal and demeaning, and has undermined the hard work and dedication of the staff at Oak Hill High School.
