CASCO — A routine traffic stop in Casco nabbed an out-of-state sex offender wanted in Georgia and living unregistered in Maine for two months.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that Deputy Sam Cofone stopped a vehicle driven by William George, 35, originally of Georgia, shortly after 8 a.m. Friday on Tenney Hill Road in Casco. A records check of George revealed that he was a registered sex offender wanted on a charge of failing to comply with the sex offender registration act. Additionally, George is wanted in Georgia for outstanding warrants associated with being a sex offender.

According to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office, George has been living in the Sanford area for about two months.

George was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice and failing to register as a sex offender. Initially, authorities in Georgia indicated that the state would extradite George. However, authorities later decided to only pursue extradition in the surrounding states.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported that the charge of failing to register as a sex offender in Maine will still stand.
