I am saddened and angered by Gov. Paul LePage’s decision to remove Judy Taylor’s labor history mural from the Department of Labor.
In the desperation to correct a bad economic situation, we must never lose sight of the history and issues that public artwork displays for us.
The impending action elevates businesses over the people who work for the businesses we enjoy and seek to attract.
Our working people, white- and blue-collar alike, must always remain self-critical and open to the dialogue and historic awareness that the beautifully rendered piece promotes.
The art, along with the Department of Labor and the entire state government complex, belongs to the people of Maine, and should remain in place.
