LEWISTON —  The Bates College men’s lacrosse team came back from an early 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 halftime lead, then broke away from No. 13 nationally ranked Wesleyan University for a 12-7 NESCAC lacrosse win on Saturday at Garcelon Field, handing the Cardinals their first loss this season.

It is Bates’ first win over a nationally ranked opponent since an 8-4 win over the then-No. 9 Cardinals in Lewiston on March 25, 2006.

Bates (3-3, 1-2 NESCAC) sophomore Gary Guinta scored his first four goals of the season to lead the Bates attack. First-year Wylie Leabo added two goals and two assists, and first-year Will Gilkeson and senior Luke Charest (Freeport, Maine) also added two goals apiece.

Junior Teddy Citrin scored three goals for the Cardinals (6-1, 2-1 NESCAC), while Max Landow scored once and added an assist. Junior goalie Grant Covington made 15 saves as Bates peppered the Wesleyan goal with 37 shots, compared to 29 shots for the Cardinals.

Bates junior goalie Adam Scharff  stopped five shots for the Bobcats.

NASHUA, N.H. — Pat Hurley scored six goals to lead the University of Maine at Farmington men’s lacrossse team to a 16-1 non-conference win over Rivier College.

Hurley’s single-game total and the team goals scored are records for the Beavers (1-1), who are in their second season as a varsity sport. Tennessee Peters  collected a hat trick and an assist in the win, while Rylan Cates supplied two goals and two assists and Kyle Mitchell put in a pair of shots. Sean Berce and Dustin Webber each registered a goal and an assist with Greg Estes tallying a goal, Sean Skillern handing out three helpers and Matt Roy adding two assists.

Danny Hooper scored the lone goal for the Raiders (0-1), who were outshot 58-19 in the contest.

Led by two goals apiece from Hurley and Mitchell, the Beavers scored five times in opening quarter and strolled out to an 11-0 lead before Hooper scored with 3:29 remaining in the third.

Ben Altmaier stopped nine shots in his first collegiate win, while Mike Foley  and Kris Gagne each grabbed eight groundballs to lead the Beavers.

Chris Benoit recorded 21 saves for Rivier.

Women’s lacrosse

Bates 10, Wesleyan 7

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Sophomore Jenn Brallier scored a career-high four goals along with one assist while senior Brianna Gross added three goals and an assist to complement the one-goal, three-assist effort of junior Joan O’Neill as Bates pulled away from homestanding Wesleyan University in the second half to grab a 10-7 NESCAC victory.

Bates recovered from an early 4-1 deficit with a three-goal run in a span of 3:39 to even the count at 4-4 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. Blair Ingraham, Emily Howe and Bridget Meedzan also scored for the Bobcats (2-3, 1-2 NESCAC).

Both goaltenders had solid games, especially in the second half, as Wesleyan junior Maggie Drowica collected 14 stops, 10 of those in the second stanza. Senior Mara Krueger  picked up 11 saves for Bates, seven in the second half.

Becker 14, UMF 9

LEICESTER, Mass. — The University of Maine at Farmington lost to Becker College 14-9 in non-conference play.

Emma Morrison and Aimee St. Germain each tallied a hat trick for UMF (0-3), while Miranda Levesque added a pair of goals and Corinne Vierkant scored a goal.

Ashley Mossey scored five goals to power the Hawks (3-2) with Morgan Hazen striking four goals and one assist and Amanda Corso providing a goal and four assists.

Hannah Goodenow made 11 saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 36-25 for the contest.

Alena Phongsa stopped eight shots for Becker.

Bates 15, Salem State 2

SALEM, MA — Junior Karl Alexander gave up just three hits in six shutout innings, while the Bates baseball team banged out 18 hits en route to a 15-2 victory over Salem State.

Eight out of the starting nine in the Bates lineup recorded at least one hit as the Bobcats cruised to an easy victory.

 Senior Noah Lynd  reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and driving in three runs for Bates (5-7). Gordy Webb went 3-for-5 and had two RBIs, while Mike Ciummei went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

 Sophomore Ryan Sonberg and seniors Chris Burke and Noah Burke  each collected two hits in the game.

 Ethan Trowt, Evan Valcourt and Geury Alonzo recorded the only hits, all singles, for the Vikings (4-8).

Maine splits pair

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Ian Leisenheimer’s three-run triple proved to be the difference in Game 2 and helped Maine salvage a split of a doubleheader by knocking of Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-1, in the nightcap.

The Black Bears dropped a 7-5 decision to St. Peter’s earlier in the day.

Leisenheimer’s big hit gave A.J. Bazdanes the victory on the mound. Bazdanes pitched eight strong innings, allowing one run on three hits while fanning seven. D.J. Voisine pitched the ninth to pick up his first save of the season for Maine (7-16).

D.J. Robinson drove in the only run for Fairleigh Dickinson (4-12).

In the first game, Maine’s attempt to rally from a 7-1 deficit fell short, with the tying runs in scoring position with one out in the ninth. Colin Gay drove in a pair of runs for the Black Bears with a double. Brian Koster drove in three runs and Chris Grimes homered for St. Peter’s.

Keith Bilodeau took the loss for Maine, giving up seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in 5.1 innings. Norway’s Matt Verrier played in both games, going 0-for-2.

UMF drops two

LYNN, MA — The University of Maine at Farmington fell 4-3 and 3-2 to Fisher College in a non-conference baseball doubleheader.

In the first game, the Falcons pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 4-3 win.

.Brian Jenkins, Josh Garneau and Matt Levine each singled and drove in a run for the Beavers (0-7). Sebastiano Petruzzelli doubled with two RBI for Fisher. Will Griffiths took the loss for Farmington with a walk and two hits allowed in a third of an inning of relief.

In the second game, Ian McAlister singled twice and plated a run for Farmington, while Garneau and Zach Keene each had a base hit. Reynaldo Nunez doubled for Fisher with Michael Flynn and Davidson Pequero each singled and drove in a run. Casey Ashey went the distance in the loss. Kevin Micheal tossed a four-hitter for Fisher.

Softball

Maine sweeps UMBC

BALTIMORE — The University of Maine opened its  conference schedule by sweeping a doubleheader with Maryland-Baltimore County, 4-1 and 6-5.

Terren Hall ripped her seventh home run of the season to lead the Black Bears to the 4-1 win in the opener. It was Hall’s 31st career homer, moving her into a tie atop Maine’s all-time home run list.

Beth Spoehr tossed a two-hitter, striking out three and allowing only a solo home run to Julia Culotta.

Kali Burnham led the offensive charge by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as the Bears held off the Retrievers in Game 2. Jean Stevens and Lindsey Jenkins also drove in runs for Maine (10-19), while Kylie Sparks picked up the win with 4.1 innings of solid relief. Ashley Scroggin led UMBC (14-11) while going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
