DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the Feb. 28 query from Alice, I was once employed by ACS in Lewiston and at that time they did not do medical billing, but from what I found on their website that may have changed. At the time I worked for them, ACS was just a go-between between the client and the customer.
It sounds like someone Alice did business with handed over her account to ACS to collect for them. If they’re going to put her on hold and forget about her, maybe she should go down to them personally (they’re right next to Planet Fitness on East Avenue) and ask for the manager of that section. Someone should be able to answer her questions or give her a contact phone number for their client that she can call.
I hope this information can be helpful. — No Name via e-mail
ANSWER: Sun Spots also found Affiliated Computer Services on East Avenue in Lewiston when she searched for ACS. It was where she called during her search and where she spoke to Kevin, who echoed what you said about the company being a go-between and not doing medical billing.
It turns out ACS is a common acronym. Read on for a more likely answer to the ACS question.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the Feb. 28 letter about medical bills, ACS stands for Advanced Collection Services. They have a mailbox in Lewiston and are affiliated/owned by CMMC. They have a physical office in Auburn. Their number is 795-2220. I know someone who works for the company. — No Name via e-mail
ANSWER: Sun Spots looked up Advanced Collection Services online and found the following address information: P.O. Box 7103, Lewiston, ME 04240; 76 High St. No. 201. Auburn, ME 04240-7649. The next letter writer provided an 800 number, which matches what was online.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I read your column this morning, and I know what ACS is. It is a company called Advanced Collection Services out of Lewiston. They are a collections company that works for CMMC.
When a patient cannot pay a bill in full, the bill is sent to ACS and they collect the money for CMMC. As far as I have been told, the bill being sent to them does not affect your credit rating.
Alice can call them at 1-800-640-0545. If she has to leave a message, leave the CMMC account number that is on the bill too so they can look up her information. They usually get back to people within a day or so. Hopefully this helps Alice out. Thanks. — No Name via e-mail
DEAR SUN SPOTS: ACS is a collections agency that CMMC uses. To straighten this out, Alice should call the hospital financial department, and they will help her get it straight. — E.M., Auburn
ANSWER: Alice of West Bowdoin did not provide Sun Spots with a copy of her bill, but with this additional information she may have better luck getting to the bottom of the mystery bill. Sun Spots thanks everyone who wrote in with information on ACS.
