Several years ago, I was standing at a trail head near the road in Pinkham Notch in the White Mountains, waiting for my hiking companion. I stepped on something and looked down to see that it was a large bottle. Looking around, I noticed several other bottles in the tall grass near the road.

I thought to myself: “The Maine Bottle Law isn’t working. What is going on?” Then I remembered — I was in New Hampshire.
