Under the urging of Superintendent Don Sivinski, the RSU 2 school board is set to vote on giving Cyr Bus Lines the school busing contract for Monmouth and Richmond. Although they deny it (and there have been informational meetings), I believe it is a done deal.

That means myself and 11 other people will lose our jobs.

Business Manager Vickie Raymond has come up with numbers that show a savings, but has not given out an itemized list. She has also not included the loss of about $125,000 due RSU 2 from recent bus purchases that would be lost, plus the loss of any future state money.

In talking with Harvey Boatman, the former people transportation director for Maine, he stated that if a school district runs its bus fleet efficiently, it should save 25 percent compared to a private company. Boatman also stated that once the buses are gone from the town, it is almost impossible, financially, to go back. Then private companies can charge whatever they want.

So, why is it a done deal?

The RSU does not have to go out for bids. They can get a price from only one company. That is difficult to believe. Just think, in this economy, a business gets a phone call to bid on a five-year, $2 million contract, and it is the only one bidding.

There will be an informational meeting at 6 p.m., March 31, at the elementary school in Hallowell that will address the issue.
