PORTLAND — Universes, an internationally recognized ensemble that mixes rhymes, beats, politics, gospel, blues and boleros, will take the stage at Merrill Auditorium on Friday, April 8.
Its show, “Live from the Edges” showcases the group’s innovative brand of hip-hop theater and tracks the evolution of its poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and performance.
Based in the Bronx, Universes is made up of four actors and tours internationally.
In 2008, Universes was chosen by the U.S. State Department to act as cultural delegates on a tour of Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Romania, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The performance, which may contain adult language, will begin at 8 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., Portland-based hip-hop artist Sontiago will lead a conversation about the evolution and significance of hip-hop theater.
Tickets to the show, presented by Portland Ovations, are $36. Call 842-0800, visit the box office at Merrill or log on to www.portlandovations.org. Tickets will also be available at the door while they last.
