AUBURN — Avis W. Pulkkinen, 92, formerly of Schooner Estates, died at Clover Manor on March 28.

She was born in East Hebron, Aug. 2, 1918, the daughter of the late Henry and Mabelle (Keene) Whitman. She graduated as valedictorian of Buckfield High School, Class of 1935. She then attended Auburn Maine School of Commerce, Class of 1937.

She became executive secretary to the president of Bates Fabrics and she also had held executive positions at Day’s Oil Co. and Geiger Brothers. Avis worked as a bookkeeper at various manufacturing companies.

On Dec. 6, 1942, she married Eino Walter Pulkkinen, who predeceased her on Dec. 7, 1990. She was a 59-year member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, also a member of AAUW, Women’s Wisdom Group, Turner Ladies Extension, Ladies of Leisure and was an avid sport fan, including the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.

She is survived by two daughters, Candace Blais and her husband, Daniel, of Auburn and Carol Malo and her husband, Ron, of East Hebron; a sister-in-law, Olga of Turner; four grandchildren, Laurie Labbe, Melissa Beatty, Brian Malo and Michelle Malo; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Whitman and Leona Doe.
