Gov. Paul LePage should be congratulated. He has joined the elite ranks of heavy-handed government officials who remove or destroy art with which they have political disagreements. I remember how the Afghanistan Taliban were so offended by millennial-old statues of Buddha that they destroyed them.
Perhaps, like Henrietta Bowdler — the woman who edited out the “immoral” parts of Shakespeare and in the process gave us the word “bowdlerization” — LePage’s name will give society a new entry in the dictionary: “Pulling a lepage” will mean censoring artwork that the government thinks is off-message.
All in all, I have to say that the governor has done a bang-up job. Way to focus on the important things.
