FARMINGTON — Local police invite the public to an open house at the site proposed for the new police station at 116 Franklin Ave.

The facility will be open to the public from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, April 1.

People may tour the building, view renovation plans and cost estimates, Chief Jack Peck Jr. said. He will be there to answer questions and accept comments.

Voters will decide Saturday at the annual town meeting if they want to accept or reject the former medical building donated by Franklin Memorial Hospital for use as the new police station.

In December, hospital officials offered the former site of the Franklin Health Farmington Family Practice building to the town after exploring options and seeing no future need for the property.

The medical practice moved to the new Medical Arts Center, adjacent to FMH, last week.

FMH, as a not-for-profit organization is not required to pay property taxes but has made annual donations to the town to acknowledge its public services. Anticipating an uncertain fiscal year, hospital officials did not anticipate the ability to give a monetary donation to the town anytime in the foreseeable future but felt this asset could benefit the town.

To complete the gift, town voters must accept the property as a donation at town meeting and will consider funding to prepare the building for the department.
