AUBURN — Edward Little High School has announced that Alexander James Smith has been chosen the Maine Principal’s Association Student of the Year. The award is made annually to honor the most outstanding student of the senior class in Maine high schools.

The son of Brent and Debra Smith, faculty said  he a deserving student who has taken the most rigorous academic course load possible during his years at ELHS. With this distinction, he also scored a perfect 5 on all five of his AP exams last spring. As a member of the Kick-Off Mentor Council, he has shown outstanding leadership for the  school community as he helped organize and deliver a strong mentor program throughout the year for ninth-graders, said staff. He is also National Honor Society president.

Smith is a three-sport athlete, excelling in football (captain) and participating in the swim team and the tennis team. He was honored by the LA Exchange Club as the regional student of the year for his outstanding service to his community and to his school. Smith is a musician and plays in the concert band, jazz band and is the pianist for school and community events.

After graduation, he will study chemical or biological engineering and will make his college selection in the next few weeks, considering UPenn, Lehigh University, Cornell, RPI, Bucknell and UMO.

Smith and Assistant Principal Leslie Morrill will attend an MPA Honors Luncheon in Bangor on Saturday, April 2.
