PARIS — The Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual trout sale this spring.

The district is offering rainbow and brook trout to be stocked in private ponds. A permit to stock is required from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The applications are available at the Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District Office at 17 Olson Road, South Paris, or by contacting the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in Augusta at 287-5261.

The pick-up day will be scheduled for early May and residents must be present to get the fish at that time. Order forms are available by emailing [email protected] or calling 743-5789, ext. 111.

The district will also hold the native conservation sale of evergreen seedlings, trees, shrubs, ferns, vines, groundcovers and perennials. The proceeds support the programming offered by the conservation district.

Conifers will be offered in groups of 10 and will be bare rootstock, needing to be planted quickly. They include Fraser Fir and Balsam Fir, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce and White Spruce, Canadian Hemlock and White Pine.

Also included will be Bugbane, Dutchman’s Breeches, Hepatica, Spiderwort and Orange Butterfly Weed. Many attract butterflies and bees. Fern types include Sensitive, Cinnamon, Royal and Christmas. Grasses, groundcovers and vines include the Virginia Rose, offered as a substitute for rosa multiflora, which has become an invasive plant in much of Maine. Also on this year’s list are Sweet Fern, Creeping Wintergreen, Lowbush Blueberry and Lowbush Cranberry.

Thirty-five native trees and shrubs are also available, including Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Serviceberry and Chokecherry, Flowering Dogwood and Autumn Blooming Witch Hazel.

All sale forms may be picked up at the new office location, 17 Olson Road, Suite 3, South Paris or by emailing [email protected]. For information, call 743-5789, ext. 111.
