WILTON — An armed man barricaded himself in his home Thursday night after a domestic complaint and surrendered several hours later, police said.

The 24-year-old was taken into custody and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation, according to a police statement.

Wilton police responded to a domestic complaint at a home on High Street between 10 and 11 p.m. They confronted a husband and wife engaged in a heated dispute and were forced to separate them.

The man was armed with a handgun, which he refused to surrender, and barricaded himself in the house.

Area police agencies, including Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Farmington Police Department, assisted Wilton police in sealing off the area.

Wilton police Chief E. Page Reynolds led the negotiations that led to the surrender after several hours.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
