In his article about the firing of Cindy Blodgett, Kalle Oakes included a comment that was misguided and needs to be addressed.
In the article he notes, “A walk-on, Kristen Baker of Bingham, eventually worked her way into the starting lineup.”
The assumption is that Baker was only able to play Division I basketball because other guards in the state had not chosen Maine as their college of choice. That is a disservice to Baker and her athletic abilities.
Had Oakes checked his facts and Augusta tournament records, he would have seen a player from a small school, Valley High School in Bingham, with great basketball credentials and statistics.
I wonder if the “walk-on” had been from Edward Little, Lewiston or St. Dom’s, or a relative, would he have made the same negative remark?

Editor’s note: Kalle Oakes has watched Kristen Baker play at least 20 games, including all of her tournament games, and is familiar with her performance and record.
