AUBURN — Douglas Hodgkin will visit Auburn Public Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, to discuss his work over the past two decades researching and writing Lewiston-Auburn history.
Hodgkin is a long-time faculty member and Professor Emeritus of political science at Bates College. But with the publication of such books as “Lewiston Memories: A Bicentennial Pictorial” (1994), “Frontier to Industrial City: Lewiston Town Government and Politics, 1770-1863” (2008) and “The Baptists of Court Street, Auburn, Maine” (2009), he has also steadily forged a role as a chronicler of the community’s past.
His most recent book, “The Lewiston and Auburn Railroad Company, 1872–2009” (2010), was the highest circulating nonfiction title at Auburn Public Library in the year after its publication.
After graduating from Lewiston High School, Hodgkin attended Yale University, graduating magna cum laude, and Duke University, where he earned his PhD in political science. He is a member of the Androscoggin Historical Society and the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Board.
He will discuss how he became interested in local history; the challenges of transforming raw, sometimes fragmentary historical data into narratives that enlighten and inform; and what he’s learned about the community in the process. Copies of his books will be available.
The free PrimeTime Tuesdays program begins at 2 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. PrimeTime programs are especially for adults ages 50 and over, but all are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
