DAR luncheon

SABATTUS — Burnt Meadow Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, will gather for a Good Citizen Awards luncheon at noon Saturday, April 9, at the home of Corley Anne Byras in Bowdoin.

Beverly Robbins, State Good Citizen Award chairwoman, will be guest speaker. Special guests will be the student winners, their parents and contest judges.

Bates symposium

LEWISTON — Education Symposium on Friday April 8th at Bates College (Pettengill Hall Ground Floor). Student presentations begin at 2:30pm followed by keynote speaker Alfie Kohn at 4:30pm and a reception at 5:45pm.

Historical society

POLAND —The Poland Historical Society has announced that the canceled March meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the District 22 schoolhouse along Route 26. The meeting will feature a presentation by David Tedford on the history of the Summit Spring Hotel.

Anyone interested in bringing Summit Spring Hotel memorabilia is welcome to do so. There will be a display table of pictures and other items. Any items brought for display will be returned to their owners at the conclusion of the program.

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club’s will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine Street, South Paris. It is co-sponsored by Friendship Squares of Wilton.

All square dancers are invited. The charge is $6 a person. Non-dancers are invited to watch at no charge. The caller for the square dancing is Water Lougee, who will be calling mainstream and plus. The round dance cuer is Bernie Porter. There will be refreshments at intermission, pot of gold drawing and door prizes.

Screenings

LISBON — The Lisbon School Department will hold kindergarten screenings on Monday to Wednesday, May 9, 10 and 11, at Lisbon Community School, 33 Mill St.

There will be a parent informational night from 6 to 7  p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the cafeteria.

An official birth certificate, social security number, immunization record and documentation of a recent (within one year) physical examination by an MD, DO or a nurse practitioner must be presented at registration.

Society speaker

MINOT — The Minot Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the town office to hear Sara Willett speak on Maine Native American Basketmakers and the Poland Spring Inn.

Willett is a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, where she received an MA in history. A resident of Poland, she will present a talk on the basketmakers’ seasonal trips to the Poland Spring Inn during the turn of the century.

During the late 19th and early 20th century, the basketmakers traveled extensively throughout the New England region, selling baskets and other wares. In her talk, Willett will highlight the reasons the Poland Spring Inn stood out as a unique venue for the basketmakers during that era.

Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served following the meeting. For more information, call President Whitney King-Buker at 966-2622.

TURNER — SAD 52 Adult and Community Education has announced April classes. Classes starting the week of April 11:

The second session of Storybook Yoga begins Monday, April 11. Sign up pre-kindergarten through third-grade students to encourages creativity.

Texting, Sexting and Chatting-Keeping Our Children Safe is a one-night class on Tuesday, April 12, that will teach parents how to help a child be safer from online predators and peer cyber harassment.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on March 27 were: first, Gerry Therrien and Don Maillette; second, Sandra Oliver and Mike Martin; third, Victor Bernier and Mike Bates; fourth, Roland Bosse and Gary David; fifth, Steve Agurkism, three-player table.
